Modern Family

Hey again,


Well, the weekend is over, unfortunately. And once again, the dreaded Monday has loomed down upon us. But let's not dwell on that matter. Instead, let's take the time to reminisce about the weekend that has just gone. More importantly, the number of shows that premiered during this period. Shows such as; 'Million Dollar Minute', 'The Neighbors', 'Modern Family' and 'Elementary' to name a few. And also, the amazing win by Hawthorne Hawks in the AFL Grand Final. Had a hunch they'd win. But I digress. What I'd like to talk about is these new shows. Some that were downright awful (*cough* 'The Neighbors' *cough*). Some that were, confusing (*cough* 'Million Dollar Minute' *cough*). And some that were plain exceptional. 'Modern Family'. So, without further ado, here's my review/opinion on the new season premiere of 'Modern Family'.



Last night, on channel Southern Cross Ten, 'Modern Family' debuted it's 5th season. And might I add, I was pleasantly surprised and pleased at the same time. What I love about 'Modern Family' is the episode's plot lines. This show is able to configure multiple plot lines, and able to maintain them, to be consistent all the way through the episode. Occasionally, these plot lines are bound to meet up near the end for one conclusive and dramatic finish. On some occasions, though, they merely end up finishing by themselves, leaving the episode to finish on one of these plots.

*SPOILERS ALERT*

The season 5 premiere of 'Modern Family' was nothing to be shunned at. It began with a major plot regarding the two characters, Cam and Mitchell (played by Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, respectively) as they found out that gay marriage had been legalized, and each one tried to come up with a way in order to surprise propose to the other. Yeah, in the end, they both proposed to each other, in an unexpected situation. I feel that this story line, is going to become the main focus throughout this entire season, as it will be very ground-breaking in the way of 'Modern Family' history, and the writers will want to make sure that they play it out as much as possible, ensuring that they keep the viewers hooked. Possibly building it up for a big finish at the season finale. But, who knows. I could be right. I could be wrong. We'll just have to wait and see.

Season 5 premiere of 'Modern Family' was, in a nutshell, beautiful. There were moments that made me laugh, and then there were moments that made me say 'aww'. Needless to say, the amazing writing skills, and the superb acting that was performed by all the cast (Ty Burrell (Phil) and Eric Stonestreet are my favourite). Overall, I give it a 7.5/10. While it may be in it's 5th season, it is still coming out with fresh new ideas. While not as good as it's previous seasons, this episode truly was a good start to a new season, and am eager to see how it will turn out.

Keep to the rhythm and the beat, HarmoKnight

Hope you have had an awesome weekend. And might I add, it has been nice and sunny today. Such a lovely day to stay inside, and play video games and watch TV. With the blinds and windows open of course. Now, a little history. I am a big fan of Nintendo, and currently own a Nintendo 3DS. I actually purchased it on the day it came out, only because I wanted to play 'The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D' of course. So with that in mind, today's post will be a little review on a Nintendo 3DS game called, HarmoKnight.

HarmoKnight is a little game created by the good folks at GameFreak, the same people who created the awesome franchise, Pokemon. HarmoKnight follows the adventures of the lead protagonist, Tempo, as he travels across the land, known as Melodia, attempting to vanquish the evil that has been created by the evil Noizoids. Along the way, he is accompanied by his pals, Tappy (a rabbit), Lyra (a heroine with a bow (which is in the shape of a harp), Tyko and Cymbal (a hulking man with a drum and a monkey with cymbals, respectively) and Woodwin (Tempo's master).

As you may have noticed by all the little subtleties above, the main focus of the game, is all to do with rhythm. More specifically, musical rhythm. The game only functions with two buttons, one to make Tempo jump, and the other to attack. In order to truly succeed at the game, you must first learn the beat of the background music, and then mimic it with the said buttons. And might I add, this is such a wonderful and unique addition to modern gaming. The music is quite literally toe-tappingly fun. My legs and head were moving in the rhythm of music it was that addictive. Of course, there is always that brief frustration moment, especially when it becomes exceedingly difficult, and it's impossible to land a hit on an enemy, cos the beat is either going too fast, or too hard.

As mentioned above, the music within HarmoKnight is amazingly composed. It is catchy, captures the mood and setting of each location. I've actually repeated some levels, just so I could listen to the music again. The graphics and imagery to accompany the music is exceedingly amazing as well. With the addition of adding the 3-D feel to it, they are colourful, beautiful and cute all at the same time. It's also an added benefit when you notice little cameos in the background, whether it's in the form of a music instrument, or a character from Pokemon. 

HarmoKnight is definitely a must buy if you own a Nintendo 3DS. The setting, graphics are just beautifully adorable. And the music. Oh wow, the music. It is unbelievably catchy, and memorable. I give HarmoKnight a 9/10. If there had been more references to the game Pokemon, then I would've given it a higher ranking. HarmoKnight is available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop for purchase right now, so go and check it out.

It's Arrested Development

Well, it's the end of another week. And you know what that means. WEEKEND!!! Yep, another weekend, of sitting around, bludging and watching TV. My ideal kind of day. But anyway, most recently, I've gotten up to speed with a comedy series called 'Arrested Development'. Now, I know I'm a little to the party, considering that it was released in 2003, but, I have gotten to know it. And might I add, it is, Amazing.

'Arrested Development' for those who have not heard of it, is an American comedy, and revolves around a very rich and wealthy family called the Bluths who do not work, but instead live off the luxury of their profitable business. So, one day, the father of the Bluth family is arrested on grounds of fraud, and is sent to jail, causing the family to having to fend for themselves. The whole series revolves around the middle child, Michael Bluth, who takes up his father's position as president, and attempts to keep his family grounded by working.

The story's and plots of 'Arrested Development' are genius. There are so many twists and turns, and what's even more amazing, is the fact that at anyone time, there can be more than one plot line, yet at the end of the episode, they all seem to meet up somewhere and somehow. Pure genius. The number of jokes that are contained within each plot is also great. 'Arrested Development' employs no studio audience or laugh tracks, where meaningless and random laughter is thrown in. No, no. Instead, it heavily relies on the quality of it's jokes, and expects you to laugh when you find something funny. Not methodically telling you to laugh by a laugh track. Another quirk that I love about 'Arrested Development'.

The character's and the actor's who portray them, are brilliant. Each character is uniquely different in their own sort of way. Each have their own personalities, and each behave in their own sort of ways. Granted they all seem to have one quirk that they each share; greed. But this is carefully laid out, and made sure not to go too overboard. The actor's who portray them on the other hand, are astounding. Jason Bateman plays the lead character Michael Bluth, and does a mighty fine job of it. Being the level headed member of the family, who is the only one that works to make money, Jason portrays him as being stern, trustworthy and loving to his family, yet at the same time, hating his family. This excellently played out, as in every comedy series, there always had to be that one control character, who is normal in comparison to everyone else. And Jason portrays Michael, brilliantly.

Overall, 'Arrested Development' is an awesome series. I've had some laughs (to be honest, a couple of times, I had to pause the show, because I was laughing that hard), and have had some gasp moments. All in all, I give it 9/10. While it is an amazing series, some of the characters annoy me just a tiny bit sometimes,. But that is the only downfall. I love the writing, I love the acting, and I highly recommend it to all who would like a good laugh.

I am currently a second year student at Charles Sturt University, in Wagga Wagga studying the art of Television Production. I enjoy watching TV shows, films and playing video games.
